International Pinotage Day, dedicated to South Africa’s own unique grape varietal, is celebrated annually on the second Saturday in October and what better way to mark this auspicious occasion than at the home of the world’s first bottled Pinotage – Lanzerac Wine Estate in Stellenbosch?

In 1925, Professor Abraham Izak Perold, the first Professor of Viticulture at the University of Stellenbosch, successfully crossed two grape varietals – Pinot Noir and Hermitage (Cinsaut) – to create the country’s first indigenous wine grape variety, Pinotage. Some years later, Lanzerac Wine Estate became the first winery in the world to use the word ‘Pinotage’ on the label of its 1959 vintage.

This year, on the 13th of October 2018, Lanzerac Wine Estate invites Pinotage lovers to spend the day exploring this proudly South African varietal through the Estate’s three Pinotage wines, whilst enjoying the relaxing atmosphere in the Estate’s Tasting Room and Deli Courtyard.

Guests can look forward to enjoying an array of delicious food offerings beneath the leafy oak trees, including Pinotage-glazed lamb burgers, smoked Pinotage BBQ beef tacos, Pinotage-cured biltong (South African cured beef) from the Lanzerac biltong counter, fresh oysters that pair beautifully with the Lanzerac Premium Pinotage Rosé as well as a variety of freshly baked cakes and desserts. Chef Stephen Fraser’s Pinotage Meat Platters are the perfect option for those wishing to share, boasting a myriad of delicious meats, including fired lamb tails, pork ribs, slow cooked brisket and boerewors (South African sausage) bites with Pinotage BBQ sauce and apricot aioli. Cheese burgers and mini boerewors rolls (South African hotdog) are available for children.

For the ultimate wine experience, three private tastings will be hosted by Lanzerac Cellar Master Wynand Lategan and Viticulturist Danie Malherbe on the day, accommodating a maximum of 15 guests per tasting.
